In sprinkler system dry pipe (dry pipe) and pre-action (pre-action), every second counts. Eliminating the delay between when the sprinkler is activated and the water is sprayed is the primary goal. In addition to mechanical accelerators, Tyco Fire Protection Product offers advanced electronic solutions for higher response speeds: Tyco QRS-2 Quick Release Switch.

This device is an electronic accelerator that uses intelligent pressure switch technology to trigger the main valve at the speed of an electrical signal.
How Does the Tyco QRS-2 Electronic Accelerator Work?
Unlike mechanical accelerators which work based on the pneumatic principle (air displacement), the QRS-2 works electronically.
- Smart Pressure Sensor: The QRS-2 is essentially a highly sensitive pressure switch. It continuously monitors the air pressure within the piping system. Its clever design allows it to distinguish between a slow pressure drop (caused by a small leak) and a very rapid pressure drop (caused by the opening of a sprinkler head).
- Detecting Activation: When one or more sprinkler heads are activated by a fire, the air pressure in the system will drop.
- Triggering Electrical Signals: The QRS-2 detects this rapid decrease in blood pressure and immediately activates its internal switch, sending an electrical signal.
- Opening the Solenoid Valve: The electrical signal is transmitted to a katup solenoid which is mounted on the main valve trim assembly (Dry Pipe Valve or Pre-action Valve). The electrified solenoid valve will open immediately.
- Opening the Main Valve: Opening the solenoid valve instantly releases the retaining pressure from the main valve’s diaphragm chamber. This loss of pressure causes the main valve to open instantly, allowing water to flood the piping system.
Advantages of the Tyco QRS-2 Electronic Accelerator
- Super Fast Response: The speed of the electrical signal is nearly instantaneous, resulting in very short valve activation times—often faster than mechanical accelerators.
- Supervised: As an electronic device, all wiring connected to the QRS-2 can be monitored by the Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP). The panel can detect any cable breaks or short circuits, providing a higher level of system reliability and safety.
- Solid-State Reliability: Lacking many complex moving parts, electronic devices can offer high long-term reliability.
- Meets NFPA 13 Standards: It is a very effective tool to help large or complex piping systems meet the maximum water delivery time requirements set by NFPA standards.
Application
Tyco QRS-2 Quick Release Switch is a highly recommended optional component to improve the performance of dry pipe systems (such as those using the Tyco DPV-1 valve) and electronically activated pre-action systems (such as those using the Tyco DV-5A valve), especially in large-scale installations.
In conclusion, in an effort to minimize fire damage, speed of response is everything. Tyco QRS-2 Electronic Accelerator offers modern solutions that provide speed, intelligence and a higher level of oversight to ensure water reaches the fire as quickly as possible.
