MEP Estimator – Fire Protection & Piping

  1. Minimum education requirement: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
  2. At least 2 years of work experience as an Estimator in the fields of MEP, fire protection, piping, or mechanical construction.
  3. Experience in preparing bid proposals for building, industrial, data center, or commercial facility projects is a plus.
  4. Able to read and understand engineering drawings, bid drawings, shop drawings, layouts, isometric drawings, and technical specifications.
  5. Able to perform quantity take-offs, prepare Bills of Quantities (BOQs), and Material Take-Offs (MTOs).
  6. Understanding fire protection systems, including sprinklers, fire hydrants, fire pumps, fire suppression piping, and supporting piping networks.
  7. Understanding the types of materials, fittings, valves, piping accessories, installation methods, and system testing requirements.
  8. Able to calculate cost estimates for materials, labor, equipment, installation, testing, and commissioning.
  9. Able to prepare unit price analyses, detailed cost estimates, and bid documents.
  10. Understand the process of requesting and evaluating price quotes from suppliers, vendors, and subcontractors.
  11. Understanding NFPA standards and other technical standards relevant to fire protection systems.
  12. Have a basic understanding of MEP coordination, particularly the relationship between fire protection and piping and other mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

  1. Analyze project documents; review engineering drawings, technical specifications, bills of quantities (BOQs), and tender documents related to fire protection and piping systems. Ensure that work requirements align with the project scope and specified requirements.

  2. Calculating Volume and Material Requirements; performing quantity take-offs based on engineering drawings and project documents; calculating material requirements, including pipes, fittings, valves, sprinklers, hydrants, fire pumps, fire alarm interfaces (if included in the project scope), and other supporting materials as required by the system being handled; and preparing Bills of Quantities (BOQ) and Material Take-Offs (MTO).

  3. Project Cost Estimation: Calculate cost estimates for materials, labor, equipment, installation, testing, and commissioning in accordance with the scope of work. Conduct unit price analysis for work items and prepare a project budget estimate. Factor in overhead costs, contingencies, and margins in accordance with company policy.
  4. Preparing Bids and Tenders: Preparing technical and commercial bid documents as required by the tender. Requesting and comparing price quotes from suppliers or vendors. Ensuring the completeness of tender documents, price calculations, and the bid’s compliance with project requirements.
  5. Internal and External Coordination: Coordinate with the Engineering, Project, Procurement, and Sales teams, as well as other relevant parties, to ensure the accuracy of calculations. Seek technical and commercial clarifications if there are discrepancies or ambiguities in project documents. Coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain information on pricing and the scope of work.
  6. Estimation Evaluation and Control: Evaluate changes to drawings, specifications, and the scope of work that impact project costs. Review and revise estimates based on changes in project requirements. Maintain and update a database of material prices, labor rates, and labor costs for use as a reference in future estimates.
  7. Reporting: Prepare reports on cost estimates and material requirements. Communicate calculation assumptions, scope exclusions, cost risks, and requests for clarification to supervisors. Ensure that all estimation documents are stored systematically and are traceable.
