What are the Types of Fire Sprinklers? Check Here!

Choosing the right type of fire sprinkler is essential to ensure the active protection system functions optimally in the event of a fire.

Each type of sprinkler has different ways of working, applications, and advantages depending on the environment and fire risk in the area. By understanding the types, you can determine which system is most suitable for the needs of your building or facility.

In the world of fire protection systems, there are five most commonly used types of fire sprinklers. Each is designed for specific environmental conditions and risks, ranging from cold climate areas to industrial facilities with flammable materials. Let's discuss them further.

5 Types of Fire Sprinklers

Wet Pipe Sprinkler System

The most common type of fire sprinkler is the wet sprinkler system. This system works by keeping its entire network of pipes filled with pressurized water at all times. When the temperature around the sprinkler head reaches a certain point, its sensor element ruptures and water rushes out to extinguish the fire.

The main advantage of this system is the very fast response as the water is already available in the pipes. In addition, maintenance is relatively simple and suitable for buildings with stable room temperatures such as offices, shopping centers, or schools.

Dry Pipe

In contrast to wet systems, dry sprinkler systems fill the pipes with compressed air or nitrogen gas. Water only flows into the system when the sprinkler heads activate due to the heat of the fire. This system is ideal for areas with low temperature risk such as warehouses or facilities in cold regions, as it prevents water from freezing in the pipes.

Although the response is slightly slower than wet systems, dry systems are still effective in preventing damage from pipe freezing.

Pre-Action System

Pre-action systems combine features of both wet and dry systems. Water is not directly in the pipes, but will enter only if two conditions are met: first, a fire detection system (such as a smoke or heat detector) must activate the alarm; second, sprinkler heads must also activate due to heat.

This type of fire sprinkler is designed for high-risk areas that require quick and thorough extinguishing, such as chemical facilities, large factories, or heavy industrial areas. These systems are highly effective in controlling large fires in a short period of time.

Sistem Busa (Foam Water Sprinkler System)

A foam system is a combination of water and extinguishing foam. When the system is active, this mixture is sprayed into the fire area to cover flammable materials and stop the spread of fire. This system is perfect for use in fuel storage areas, aircraft hangars, or any area that has the potential for fire due to flammable liquids.

The foam helps cut off the oxygen supply to the fire, while cooling the surface and preventing re-ignition.

Understanding the different types of fire sprinklers is essential to determine the protection system that best suits your needs.

Be it wet systems for office buildings, dry systems for low-temperature warehouses, to foam systems for high-risk facilities where each system is designed to provide maximum protection under specific conditions.
